West Farm Pit Phase 3 & Phase 8 Slurry Wall

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Odin was contracted by Prowers Aggregates to construct two soil bentonite (SB) cutoff walls and to repair a leaking cutoff wall. The project was undertaken to support development of water supply reservoirs for the local community following completion of aggregate mining operations at the site. The goal of Phases 3 and 8 was to install two segments of SB cutoff wall that would create a loop and tie the end of the wall into the beginning. The separate loops, or cells, are excavated to and founded upon bedrock. The low permeability cutoff wall blocks groundwater movement, allowing Prowers Aggregates to dewater within the cell, which has allowed them to mine up to 73 feet deep. Outside of the cell, the water table is approximately 10 feet deep, limiting excavation and mining operations.

Construction of Phase 8 began with one Komatsu PC1250 excavator on August 5th, 2021. Seven days later, the second PC1250 began excavation on the opposite slide of the cell. The Phase 8 cutoff wall ranged from 23 to 47 feet deep with a length of 4,814 linear feet. This phase resulted in 172,593 vertical square feet of SB cutoff wall. Phase 3 began with one PC1250 on August 30th, while the other excavator completed the loop on Phase 8. Phase 3 was greater in depth and length, ranging from 39 to 73 feet deep and spanning 10,525 linear feet. Phase 3 resulted in a cutoff wall of 601,000 vertical square feet.

During construction of Phase 3, Odin was requested to repair an existing SB wall, constructed eight years prior. Prowers Aggregates noticed a substantial amount of groundwater flowing from one side of the cell. It was determined that the cutoff wall was letting water pass through in that area of the cell. Odin was tasked with excavating approximately 600 linear feet of the existing cutoff wall, followed by reconstructing that segment. The average depth was 42 feet and the additional segment was finished in six working days. After the wall was reconstructed, mine operators noticed a significant reduction in groundwater infiltrating the cell. Prowers was no longer required to run their dewatering pumps for 24 hours a day.
